Movements was conceived and directed by François-Michel Pesenti and was inspired by Henri Michaux's collection of drawings Mouvements. I participated as an actor. It was created for Chapter Arts Centre's 1998 Iconoclastic Theatre season, an event which had a fundamental impact on my understanding of what performance is and can and cannot be.
François-Michel loaded his actors with greater and greater demands, such as to imagine that they were in a play within a play within a play, until the burden became such that not even the traditionally trained actors among us could prevent their personalities from appearing in the performance. This sense of real people being present formed the core of the piece rather than any narrative structure.
